Abstract

This event is solely intended for Specsavers optometrists within the area who wish to undertake their Glaucoma Part 2 practical

Specsavers Clinical Performance Consultant for the East Area is Bhavik Palmer bhavik.parmar@specsavers.com please contact them if you require any support.

The assessment is in the form of 5 assessment stations, each takes 5 minutes. Please allow 60 minutes for the whole assessment process. You may be required to remain for the following session to sit as a 'patient' for your colleagues. The assessment is based on the 4 LOCSU Glaucoma distance learning lectures. These lectures and MCQs must be successfully completed before booking on to the event. Contact Specsavers to obtain the promo code and instructions in order to access these lectures via the WOPEC website.

Optometrists must be registered with the GOC and hold a 'GOC-' number in order to book on the assessment.

Assessment stations:

  1. Measuring IOP with a Goldmann applanation tonometer (on a patient)
  2. Calibration of a Goldmann applanation tonometer
  3. Van Herick’s peripheral chamber depth assessment (on a patient)
  4. Slit lamp binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (Volk) examination of the optic nerve head (model eyes)
  5. Written short answer glaucoma case study

Practice makes perfect - Experience dictates that, if you are relatively new to any of the four techniques named above, it would be advisable to gain as much practice as possible between now and the event. It is expected that you are performing these techniques regularly on your routine patients, particularly the use of a Goldmann tonometer (T Type). It is also recommended to review the glaucoma lectures prior to your assessment, this has proved valuable for the written case study.
