Celebrating Excellence Awards - 2017
School of Optometry and Vision Sciences
The School of Optometry has achieved outstanding student results this year. Its undergraduate programmes remain oversubscribed in the face of increasing competition. Graduates consistently outperform other UK Schools of Optometry in the College of Optometrists’ Professional Exams (90% pass rate vs 75% competitor average).
Undergraduate success is due to an ambitious programme design that requires students to conduct a basic sight test by the end of their first year, and ends with them being personally responsible (under supervision) for the visual welfare of members of the public in a purpose-built eye clinic, underpinned by a spiral curriculum that builds strong theoretical and clinical knowledge.
Student experience is central to all the School’s activities. Nowhere is this more evident than in the improvement in Assessment and Feedback, achieved through partnership with students to identify strengths and weaknesses and establish effective interventions.
Excellence in postgraduate eye care education is delivered by the Wales Optometry Postgraduate Education Centre, which provides high quality postgraduate training and continuing professional education to almost 11,000 eye care professionals. It is at the forefront of professional practice, having introduced an Independent Prescribing Certificate for Optometrists in the last year, and gaining approval for an MSc in Ophthalmic Nursing, jointly with HCARE.
The School occupies 1st place in The Complete University Guide for 2017 and 2018, and has 100% employment rate for graduates.
