Refraction Certificate Revision Course for Ophthalmologists

The refraction certificate revision course will be running at Cardiff University 10-12 May 2019 AND 14-16 June 2019. If your refraction skills benefitted from our training, then please tell your colleagues who may soon be undertaking their RCO Refraction Certificate examination.

This comprehensive course is specifically designed for those undertaking the Royal College of Ophthalmologist’s Refraction Certificate Exam. It develops the knowledge and practical techniques required for the exam’s competencies. The course is open to all levels; from beginners, to those who are more experienced.

The emphasis is on supervised, practical sessions. Delegates will receive instruction in small groups and have the opportunity to practice all aspects of refraction on volunteer patients. Please note that we will cover focimetry technique but not hand neutralisation of spectacles. There will be a mock OSCE situation which comprises stations timed under exam conditions. Feedback is offered on the performances. Prior to the event attendees will have on-line access, via the WOPEC website, to 6 brand-new lectures on different refraction techniques:

  1. Vision and Prescriptions
  2. Retinoscopy Routine
  3. Subjective Sphere and Cyl.
  4. The Binocular Balance Tests
  5. Subjective Near Add
  6. The Refraction Routine

Several supervisors will facilitate the event; both practicing optometrists and optometry academics, and all experienced in teaching refraction. The tutor ratio to doctors will be 1:4. Cardiff University School of Optometry facilities are ideal for this event and attendees will have access to the fully equipped dispensing workshop and refraction clinic.

The duration of the event is 2.5 days (Friday 14.00 until Sunday 16.00), it is held 3-4 times a year, corresponding with the RCO practical exam dates. Cost £750, including refreshments and lunch. For further information contact: wopec@cardiff.ac.uk
