The MSc in Clinical Optometry provides a unique combination of distance learning and practical training to suit you.

The postgraduate team in Cardiff have been specially selected to support eye care professionals in their work. The team have developed more than 20 modules (each worth 10, 20 or 30 credits) covering a wide range of topics.

You can study at your own pace, watching the lectures online when and where you can. The majority of modules will then have a practical day in June which will allow you to improve your skills in our purpose built clinics.

Low Vision – Theory and Practical

Completion ofboth these Low Vision modules will automatically make you eligible for the award of a Professional Certificate in Low Vision from the College of Optometrists.

Acute Eye Care – Advanced

In this module students are encouraged to use advanced instrumentation to investigate the causes of acute eye problems. They will work through case history scenarios which reflect advanced, unusual and mixed examples of acute eye conditions in practice with an emphasis on practical skills training, e.g. foreign body removal. 

Paediatric Optometry

This module has a particular emphasis on the need for eye examinations for children and how the practitioner can ensure child-friendly testing procedures for a successful examination. The course also considers binocular vision anomalies and specific learning difficulties, as well as the role of the optometrist in managing children with these conditions. 

Study Skills

This module provides postgraduate students with an appreciation of their own learning style and will explain the problems of distance learning and how to be effective in managing independent studies.

Glaucoma modules Level 1 and Level 2

These modules have been specifically designed to complement the levels of activity and responsibility that optometrists could undertake in community and hospital practice. Completion of the Level 1 module (if you have already completed the LOCSU/WOPEC Glaucoma discs) will automatically award you the College’s Professional Certificate in Glaucoma.

Primary Eye Care Update - Theory

This module provides postgraduate optometrists with the opportunity to update theoretical knowledge in good, current UK optometric practice. It is particularly suitable for those optometrists who have had a career break from general optometric practice.

Leadership Skills for Optical Professionals

This module provides optical professionals with the opportunity to become an effective leader at both local and regional levels within the optical sector through the support and development of LOCs, building effective strategic networks, influencing policy makers and enhancing eye health services for patients.

Eye Care in Diabetes

Optometrists will encounter increasing numbers of diabetic patients in practice and this module provides postgraduate optometrists with the opportunity to enhance their skills in the detection and management of diabetic retinopathy to an advanced level. The emphasis will be on the implementation of evidence-based ocular examination and management of patients with diabetes and its ocular complications.

Tear Film

Mr. Teifi James will be leading our Tear Film module, and will be supported by Dr. Katharine Evans.

It includes a two day workshop as well as online lectures, podcasts, and coursework. The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to enhance your skills in the assessment and management of tear film disorders at an advanced level.
