Minor Eye Conditions Service Pathway (MECS): MECS accredited practitioners will be able to provide a prompt assessment of a patient presenting with an acute eye condition. As many patients as possible will have their management maintained within the primary care setting, thus avoiding unnecessary referrals to hospital services. Where referral to secondary care is required it will be to a suitable specialist with appropriate urgency. This on-line course is also suitable for the practitioner who wishes to refresh their knowledge to participate in a locally commissioned urgent eyecare service (CUES). Pre- and Post-Operative Cataract: Practitioners will be enabled to inform and manage their patients presenting with cataract within the primary care setting and reduce the number of patient visits to secondary care. The Pre- and Post-Operative Cataract course comprises five online theoretical training lectures and MCQs, a visual recognition (VRICS) test and a video following a cataract patient journey in hospital. This course provides the practitioner with training to support glaucoma referral filtering and ocular hypertension (OHT) monitoring which is in line with NICE guidelines. The aim of the course is to provide community and hospital based practitioners with knowledge and skills to provide a high standard of eye care to children of all ages. It includes topics covering assessment, screening, referral and treatment pathways, with an emphasis on the importance of good communication with children and young people, their parents/ carers and with other professionals. The course comprises five, CPD accredited online theoretical training lectures with MCQs: Refractive development, and distribution of refractive errors throughout childhood; Assessment of refractive error and prescribing for children; Tests and techniques for assessing vision in children and expected values; Vision screening in childhood; Assessment of ocular health and common defects in childhood. This lecture series is designed to complement the LOCSU Maculopathy Referral Filtering and Monitoring pathway. The aim of the series is to build on existing knowledge of maculopathy with an emphasis on monitoring in primary care, referral and treatment pathways and optical coherence tomography (OCT) interpretation. The series aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of case-finding for AMD. For both new and review (wet active) AMD patients, and so improve the speed at which people are diagnosed and treated within the hospital eye service, to help prevent loss of sight, as well as people with a diagnosis of late AMD who require regular monitoring in primary care practice. Eyecare Services for People with a Learning Disability
People with learning disabilities are much more likely to have eye and vision problems than members of the general population, but they find accessing eye care more difficult because of a range of barriers, including a lack of confidence among clinicians on how to adapt their practice to meet the needs of this patient group. This distance learning online training package contains lectures and MCQs compiled by people with many years of experience in the field. It provides an insight into how learning disability and learning disability is defined, how practice can be adapted and how barriers to service provision, both clinical and non-clinical, can be overcome. This lecture series is designed to complement the LOCSU pathway for people who are taking either Hydroxychloroquine or Chloroquine and require monitoring for retinopathy. Resources have been developed to align with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists recommendations. The aim of this series is to build on existing knowledge of Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine retinopathy with an emphasis on monitoring in primary care. The LOCSU integrated service delivery model is introduced which outlines how monitoring for retinopathy can be delivered, in alignment with the RCOphth Guideline, within an optical practice. The series aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of case-finding for Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine retinopathy, and so improve the speed at which people are diagnosed and referred for treatment to prevent loss of sight.
