Abstract

This event prioritises bookings for optometrists who practise in the Cheshire and Merseyside area.

The assessment is in the form of 5 assessment stations, each takes 5 minutes. Please allow 60 minutes for the whole assessment process. You may be required to remain for the following session to sit as a 'patient' for your colleagues. The assessment is based on the 4 LOCSU Glaucoma distance learning lectures. These lectures and MCQs must be successfully completed before booking on to the event. If you are a Cheshire LOC practitioner and require a unique access code for the on-line lecture series, please email Sandie McBennett sandiemcbennett.cheshireloc@gmail.com stating your name, email address, and practice.

Optometrists must be registered with the GOC and hold a 'GOC-' number in order to book on the assessment.

This event is free for Cheshire LOC practitioners. Practitioners from neighbouring LOCs will be considered on availability and payment of the fee of £150. For further information, to book your place and complete the payment, please contact Sandie McBennett sandiemcbennett.cheshireloc@gmail.com

Assessment stations:

  1. Measuring IOP with a Goldmann applanation tonometer (on a patient)
  2. Calibration of a Goldmann applanation tonometer
  3. Van Herick’s peripheral chamber depth assessment (on a patient)
  4. Slit lamp binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (Volk) examination of the optic nerve head (model eyes)
  5. Written short answer glaucoma case study.

Practice makes perfect - Experience dictates that, if you are relatively new to any of the four techniques named above, it would be advisable to gain as much practice as possible between now and the event. It is expected that you are performing these techniques regularly on your routine patients, particularly the use of a Goldmann tonometer (T Type). It is also recommended to review the glaucoma lectures prior to your assessment, this has proved valuable for the written case study.
